Breaking Barriers: The BIRTH Network and Its Impact on Maternal Mental Health
At Black Girls Mental Health Collective (BGMHC), we’re not just addressing the immediate mental health needs of Black women and birthing people; we’re actively building systems of support that tackle the root causes of maternal health inequities. One of our most ambitious projects is the BIRTH Network, a community-driven initiative focused on breaking down systemic barriers to maternal mental health and ensuring that every birthing person has access to the care they deserve.
What Is the BIRTH Network?
The BIRTH Network stands for Building Inclusive, Resilient, Transformative, and Holistic support systems. This initiative is designed to create an interconnected web of resources, services, and partnerships that address the complex needs of Black women and birthing people. Our goal is to transform the maternal health experience through trauma-informed, culturally competent care that integrates mental health, physical health, and community support.
Through this network, we aim to achieve:
Improved Access: Expanding availability of mental health services tailored to perinatal and postpartum needs.
Culturally Competent Care: Training providers to understand and respect the unique challenges faced by Black women.
Holistic Support: Connecting birthing people to wraparound services, including housing, nutrition, and parenting resources.
Why We Created the BIRTH Network
The need for the BIRTH Network stems from stark disparities in maternal health outcomes:
Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to white women.
Postpartum depression affects up to 40% of Black mothers, yet more than half of cases go untreated.
Systemic barriers such as racism in healthcare, financial constraints, and lack of access to culturally competent providers exacerbate these challenges.
While the statistics are daunting, they underscore the urgency of our mission: to create a safety net where none currently exists.
Key Components of the BIRTH Network
1. Universal Screening Protocols
The BIRTH Network prioritizes early identification of mental health challenges through routine screenings. Our goal is to screen birthing people at least eight times during the perinatal period, using evidence-based tools like the EPDS (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) and GAD-7. These screenings ensure no one slips through the cracks.
2. Perinatal Mental Health Care
The network provides individual, family, and couples therapy with a focus on culturally competent care. Our clinicians specialize in trauma-informed approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), tailored to address the unique stressors experienced by Black birthing people.
3. Collaborative Partnerships
Through collaborations with local hospitals, doulas, midwives, and community organizations, the BIRTH Network connects birthing people to comprehensive services. These partnerships include access to lactation consultants, nutritionists, and housing resources.
4. Community-Based Education and Advocacy
The BIRTH Network empowers birthing people through workshops and support groups focused on navigating healthcare systems, recognizing mental health symptoms, and advocating for equitable treatment.
5. Financial Assistance
Thanks to grants and donations, the BIRTH Network offers therapy vouchers and subsidies for uninsured or underinsured clients. This funding directly addresses one of the biggest barriers to mental health care: cost.
